Prepared and processed foods
Breaded poultry products
Designed to be cooked from frozen, and one of the few foods where the packaging genuinely is the best source.
What it does in fast-moving hot air
The coating is pre-fried, so it already contains oil and browns readily without any being added. The interior is usually already cooked or partly cooked, which means the cooking question is about reaching a safe temperature through a frozen centre rather than about cooking raw meat. Crowding is the main failure: the coating needs dry air on all sides or it goes pale and soft.
Why the cut matters
Frozen breaded poultry products are engineered for exactly the conditions an air fryer provides, and are one of the small number of foods where a manufacturer has tested the cooking instruction properly and it should be followed.
Cooking pages
- Frozen chicken nuggets — Follow the packet — and know why the packet is right about this one.
- Breaded chicken breast — A coating that wants high heat over meat that does not, cooked from frozen in most kitchens.
- Chicken goujons — Eight to ten minutes from frozen — the quickest breaded poultry there is.
- Chicken Kiev — Sixteen to eighteen minutes at 190°C from frozen, and the temperature is lower on purpose.
- Frozen chicken burgers — Fourteen to fifteen minutes at 200°C from frozen for six.
- Frozen chicken steaks — Fourteen to fifteen minutes at 200°C, the same as a chicken burger and a different shape.
There is deliberately no cooking time on this page. A food does not have one — a cut, at a thickness, in a state, at a loading, in a particular appliance does. That is what the pages above are for.
