What actually wears it

Three things, and the manuals in this catalogue are unusually united about all three. Metal utensils dragged across the surface. Abrasive cleaning — scouring pads, steel wool, abrasive powders and creams. And heat with nothing in the pan, which is a smaller risk in an air fryer than in a frying pan but is not nothing.

Cosori's manual states that the basket and crisper plates carry a non-stick coating and that metal utensils and abrasive cleaning materials are to be avoided. Instant Brands states that metal cleaning utensils must not be used on the non-stick cooking tray. Tower states that scouring pads, steel wool and any strong solvent or abrasive cleaning agent must not be used on the appliance or its accessories. Ninja lists the dishwasher-safe parts and then recommends hand-washing them anyway, specifically to extend their life.

That last one is worth sitting with. A manufacturer telling you not to use a feature it has certified is a manufacturer telling you the part is a consumable.

The care, which is four sentences long

Keep metal off it. Silicone or wooden tongs and spatulas cost a few pounds and are the whole of the intervention.

Soak rather than scrub. Hot soapy water and time does what force does, without the force. Cosori publishes its own method for baked-on grease — a paste of baking soda and water, spread on, left for fifteen minutes, then rinsed and washed normally — which is a manufacturer explicitly offering an alternative to abrasion.

Hand-wash where you can, even where the dishwasher is permitted. Dishwasher detergent is aggressive and the cycle is long.

Do not stack anything inside the basket in a cupboard. A crisper plate rattling against a basket in a drawer does the same damage a fork does, more slowly.

When the coating has already gone

First, what AirfryerHQ will not tell you: whether flaking coating is a health risk. There is a great deal of confident content in both directions and this register holds no toxicological evidence, no food-contact standard and no authority statement on the question. Asserting that it is fine would be as unsupported as asserting that it is dangerous, and we are not going to do either.

What can be said is what the manufacturers say, and what follows from the appliance working properly. A coating that is peeling is a coating that is coming off, which means pieces of it are ending up somewhere, and a basket whose surface is breaking down sticks more, cleans worse and needs more scrubbing — which accelerates the same failure. Every manual in this catalogue treats the coated parts as things to be protected, which is a clear signal about what a damaged one means.

The practical position: a scratch is not a crisis and a surface that has begun to flake is the end of that part's working life. Replace the part if you can get one, and if you cannot, the appliance has reached the end rather than the part.

If you want a definitive safety answer, the manufacturer of your specific appliance is the body that can give one about their own coating, and asking them is a reasonable thing to do.

Why this decides how long the appliance lasts

An air fryer has very few parts that wear. The motor and the element are not handled, not washed and not scraped; the basket and crisper plate are handled, washed and scraped every single time it is used. So the coating is the thing that fails, and whether a replacement can be bought is what determines whether a five-year-old machine is repairable or refuse.
