Stop and read this first

If a liner, a piece of paper or any packaging has touched the heating element: stop, switch off and unplug at the wall, and let the appliance cool completely before removing it. Do not carry on cooking with anything scorched in the chamber. If anything has caught fire at any point, do not use the appliance again until the manufacturer has advised you.

What is happening

The airflow that makes an air fryer work is strong enough to move anything light. Most of the time this is an annoyance — kale in one corner, a slice of bread stood on its edge. Occasionally the thing that gets lifted ends up against the heating element, which is the mechanism behind every securing rule in the materials section.

Why it happens

Use a rack or trivet over light food

Trade-off: The face under the rack browns slightly less.

Never preheat with an empty liner in the basket

An empty chamber with a loose sheet in it is the exact condition in which a liner reaches the element. Put the liner in with the food, not before.

Cook a fuller load

More food in the basket gives the air something to push against and holds the pieces in place. It is the rare case where filling the basket more is the fix.
