A burning smell from the air fryer
The question is not what is burning but what KIND of burning. Food and fat smell one way; insulation smells another, and only one of those is a cooking problem.
Stop and read this first
Stop using the appliance. Switch it off and unplug it at the wall — not at the appliance — and do not use it again until the manufacturer has advised you. An air fryer draws 1.5-2.8kW continuously and a fault in one is not a domestic repair. Do not open it, do not run it to see whether it happens again, and do not plug it into an extension lead to test it somewhere else. If there is any flame, smoke that does not smell of cooking, a smell of burning plastic or insulation, visible damage to the cord or plug, or the appliance has tripped a breaker or an RCD, treat it as a fault rather than a nuisance.
What is happening
A burning smell is the symptom most worth splitting before diagnosing, because two completely different events produce it. Carbonising fat on a hot surface smells like a neglected grill pan and is a cleaning matter. Overheating plastic or electrical insulation smells sharp and chemical and is not.

Each of these has an answer you already know, and each one rules something out.
What does the smell actually resemble?
- Burnt food or an old grill pan — A cleaning problem. Unpleasant rather than dangerous.
- Chemical or plastic, on an appliance used fewer than about five times
- Sharp, chemical or like hot electrics, on an appliance that is not new — Stop and read the escalation below before anything else.
Is the plug or the socket warm to the touch after use?
- No
- Yes, noticeably warm or hot — A warm plug on a high-power appliance is a symptom in its own right. Stop using it.
Why it happens
Commonest first. It is almost always the boring one, and a page that walks you through the exotic causes before the obvious one has given you a longer path to a fixed dinner.
Most common
Old fat on the element, the shield or the pan is carbonising
Fat that has been heated once polymerises into a varnish that then chars on every subsequent use. It builds up in the places nobody looks — the underside of the element, the splatter shield, the floor of the outer pan — which is why the smell survives washing the basket.

Common
A crumb, a piece of food or a liner has reached the element
Anything the fan can lift ends up against the element, where it burns directly rather than cooking. Light foods, loose parchment and unweighted foil are the usual candidates.

The appliance is new and burning off manufacturing residue

Something electrical is overheating
A sharp, chemical, insulation-like smell — particularly with no fatty food in the machine, or accompanied by a hot plug, a discoloured socket or a tripped breaker — is not a cooking smell. It is a fault in a mains appliance.
