How to tell, without a thermometer
- Somebody is in the house and awake while it runs
- Nothing flammable stored above or beside it
If it has not got there: If you have to leave the kitchen, that is fine — leaving the house or going to bed with it running is not. Switch it off at the socket when you are finished rather than leaving it on standby.
Important: If you smell burning, hear an unusual noise, or see smoke that is not obviously fat smoke from the food, switch off at the socket immediately and do not use the appliance again until the manufacturer has advised you.
Why this is the rule
This is the single most commonly ignored instruction in the category, because the appliance has a timer and switches itself off and therefore feels like it does not need watching. The three UK recalls AirfryerHQ has read describe exactly why that reasoning fails: in each case the appliance's own protection did not do what it was supposed to. One alert states that the thermal fuses could exceed their marked 150-degree limit without the product cutting out, and that prolonged use on the highest setting warped and melted plastic and metal parts. The timer is not a safety device, and being in the room is what turns a fault into a scorch mark instead of a fire.
