How to tell, without a thermometer
- The appliance is in a wall socket, not a strip or a reel
- The plug and socket are cool to the touch after use, with no discolouration
If it has not got there: Move the appliance to a position where it reaches a wall socket. If no wall socket is reachable, that is a job for an electrician rather than for a longer lead.
Important: Burn or scorch marks on a plug or socket mean stop. Do not use that socket or that appliance again until an electrician has looked at it.
Why this is the rule
An air fryer is a heating appliance and draws accordingly: the models in this catalogue range from about 1.4 to 2.6 kilowatts, and one manufacturer states 11 amps outright. That is most of what a 13-amp plug is rated for, and it is more than many extension leads will carry safely alongside anything else plugged into them — particularly a coiled lead, which cannot shed the heat it generates. One manufacturer prohibits extension cords in its safeguards, and notes that the short power cord fitted to the appliance is deliberate: it is short to reduce the risk of it being grabbed or tripped over, not because a longer one would have cost more.
