AirfryerHQ

Can you put oven-safe glass in an air fryer?

Safe only in specific conditions

This is only appropriate within specific limits. Outside them, AirfryerHQ makes no claim.

Only if all of these are true

  • Must be rated for the purpose. Use glass sold as oven-safe. Tumblers, storage jars and serving dishes are not, whatever they look like.
  • A temperature limit applies. Do not move it between temperature extremes. Fridge-cold glass into a preheated chamber, or hot glass onto a cold worktop, is what breaks it.
  • Must fit with space around it. Leave air space around the dish so the chamber still circulates.
  • Your manual must permit it. One manufacturer permits a metal or glass baking dish for its Baking programme specifically, which is permission for a mode rather than for the appliance.

What the manufacturers actually say

The manufacturers do not always agree, and silence is not permission. Each row below is what one company’s own manual says — or, where it says nothing, the fact that it says nothing.

  • Instant: Permits it in specific conditions

For the Baking programme only, the manual permits a metal or glass baking dish to be used.

  • Tower: Permits it

The manual instructs the use of a baking tin or oven dish for baking and for fragile food.

What can go wrong

Oven-safe glass is permitted by name in one manual read this sprint, which is more than most materials in this section can claim. The risk is not that it cannot take the temperature; it is that it cannot take a sudden CHANGE in temperature, and a small chamber that reaches its set point in ninety seconds delivers changes faster than an oven does.

  • Can crack from sudden temperature change

Bring the dish to room temperature before it goes in, and let it cool on a wooden board or a rack rather than a cold or wet surface.

  • Can block airflow

Use a dish smaller than the basket floor with a clear gap all round.

Temperature limit

Around 250°C.

Borosilicate ovenware is generally rated well above an air fryer's range, so the ceiling here is the appliance's rather than the material's. The real constraint is rate of change, not absolute temperature, and no manufacturer read this sprint quantifies it.

It depends on your appliance

The answer is not the same in every machine. Where the element sits relative to the food, and how hard the fan blows, change what this material does.

  • Basket air fryer Safe only in specific conditions

A small drawer heats fast, so the temperature change a dish experiences going in is more abrupt than in an oven. Thermal shock risk is correspondingly higher.

  • Oven-style air fryer Safe only in specific conditions

A larger cavity heats more gently and takes an ordinary dish more comfortably, which is closer to the conditions glass ovenware was designed for.

Your manual governs

One manufacturer permits a glass baking dish for its Baking programme specifically. That is permission scoped to a mode, and it is not a statement about using glass on a high-temperature crisping setting.

Evidence and confidence

Moderate confidenceWell supported, but from a narrower base of sources than we would like.
Applies to
Specific to this type of appliance
Why this rating
Two manufacturers permit oven dishes and one names glass specifically. Not upgraded to high because the permission is scoped to a baking mode and neither source addresses glass on a high-temperature setting, which is the case where thermal shock would matter most.

What this does not cover

  • The permission read is scoped to one programme. Nothing found this sprint addresses glass at the top of an air fryer's temperature range.
  • No source quantifies a safe rate of temperature change. The thermal-shock guidance is general glassware practice.

Use this instead

  • Metal tins, trays and cookwareExplicitly permitted by one manufacturer for baking, and recommended by three others whenever a batter is involved.
  • Ceramic and stonewareOne manufacturer prohibits it for air frying outright. That single prohibition is why this answer depends on your model.
  • Ramekins and small oven dishesSmall enough to leave airflow around them, which is what makes them the most practical cookware for a drawer machine.
