What size air fryer do you actually need?
Capacity in litres measures the volume of the drawer, and food does not cook in a volume — it cooks in one layer. A five-litre drawer and a five-litre cavity hold very different amounts of food arranged the way it actually needs to be arranged.
Questions this answers
- What size air fryer do I need for a family of four?
- Is a bigger air fryer better?
- Should I buy a dual-basket air fryer?
Why litres mislead
Most of a drawer's depth is headroom. Chips piled three deep do not cook; they steam. So the number that matters is the base area available for a single layer, and manufacturers do not publish it.
As a rough guide, a single layer of chips needs somewhere around 200 square centimetres per portion. Measure the base of a basket you are considering — or the one you already own — and you will have a better number than any capacity figure on the box.
The dual-basket question
Two drawers solve the problem a single machine cannot: cooking two things at different temperatures so they finish together. That is a genuine advantage and it is why these have taken over the mid-market.
The trade is worktop space, which is real — these are large appliances — and that each individual drawer is often slightly smaller than a comparable single-basket machine. If you routinely cook one thing in quantity rather than two things at once, a single larger basket may serve you better.
The case for buying smaller
A larger chamber takes longer to preheat, uses more electricity, and takes more worktop. If most of your cooking is one or two portions, a small machine does it faster and cheaper, and the occasional large batch can be done in two goes.
The instinct to size up for the occasional big cook is the same instinct that fills a basket too full, and it costs something every single time you use the appliance.
Evidence and confidence
- Applies to
- Specific to this type of appliance
- Why this rating
- The area-not-volume argument now has direct manufacturer support, and from an unusually clean natural experiment: one manufacturer publishes an optimal fry quantity for two of its own machines, and the figure rises far less than the volume does. Set against a marketing claim of 1.4kg per drawer and another manufacturer's half-full limit, the gap between advertised capacity and cooking capacity is documented rather than argued. The 200cm² per-portion figure remains AirfryerHQ's estimate.
