Is an air fryer cheaper to run than an oven?

There is now measured evidence for this question rather than only arithmetic, and it says the saving is real and that it comes from somewhere people rarely acknowledge: the air fryer is cheaper partly because it is smaller. Once the meal stops fitting in one load, the comparison changes shape.

Watts times hours gives you the dashed rectangle: the most the appliance could possibly have used. The solid line is what a thermostatically controlled appliance actually does — full power to heat up, then cycling on and off to hold temperature. The real figure is the area under the line, and it is smaller. How much smaller depends on the machine, the food and the kitchen; the cycling here is schematic, because AirfryerHQ has not measured a duty cycle and will not invent one.

An oven heats its whole cavity once, whether you put one potato in it or eight. An air fryer heats a small chamber, and if the meal does not fit it heats it again. That is why the saving is large for one portion and shrinks as the quantity rises — and why a comparison that does not say how much food was cooked is not a comparison. The heights here are illustrative; where the crossover falls depends on your machine and your meal.

The short answer, with its condition attached

For small quantities, yes, and by a wide margin. In the only controlled comparison this catalogue holds, an air fryer used roughly a third of what a built-in electric oven used to bake one jacket potato, and a third for 320g of chips, with preheating counted on both sides.

For a meal that fills the oven, the honest answer is that nobody has measured it and the arithmetic stops favouring the air fryer somewhere. An oven heats its cavity once whether you put one potato in it or eight. An air fryer heats a small chamber, and if the meal does not fit it heats it again, and again.

Where the saving actually comes from

Not efficiency in any deep sense — both appliances turn essentially all their electricity into heat. Three things account for the difference.

VOLUME. A five-litre chamber needs far less energy to bring to temperature than a sixty-litre cavity, and most of an oven's consumption on a small job is heating space around the food.

PREHEATING. A fan oven wants eight to twelve minutes before the food goes in. Several air fryers state in their manuals that preheating is not necessary at all. On a fifteen-minute cook that is most of the difference.

SIZE OF THE JOB. This is the one that gets left out. The measured cake comparison in this catalogue is between a full-size oven cake and a smaller cake that fits an air-fryer basket, and the test publication says so. It is not evidence that an air fryer bakes a cake for a third of the energy; it is evidence that it bakes a SMALLER cake for a third of the energy.

Batches, and why they change the answer

A single-basket air fryer cooking chips for four people is usually cooking two batches. The second batch starts in a hot chamber so it costs less than the first, but it is not free, and the total is no longer the number in anybody's comparison.

The oven, meanwhile, has done the whole tray in one run. Its consumption barely changed when you doubled the food, because almost all of it went into heating the cavity.

So the comparison has a crossover somewhere, and where it falls depends on your machine's usable area, your meal and how patient you are. AirfryerHQ has not measured it. What this site's calculator will do is let you put the batch count in, which is more than most published comparisons manage.

The other things that move the answer

YOUR TARIFF. A unit rate is a fact about one household on one day. Every cost figure on this site is calculated from a rate you enter, because a rate baked into a page is wrong for most readers within months and none of them can tell.

WHAT ELSE IS IN THE OVEN. If the oven is already on for something else, adding a tray to it is nearly free and the air fryer cannot compete with nearly free.

WHETHER YOU WOULD HAVE COOKED THE SAME THING. Air fryers change what people cook. A comparison between a meal you would have made and a different meal you now make is not an energy comparison.

So should you stop using the oven?

For one or two portions of anything that suits an air fryer, the evidence supports using it and the saving is not trivial. For a Sunday roast, an oven is doing work an air fryer cannot do at all and the comparison stops being meaningful.

The claim worth being sceptical of is the unqualified one. 'Air fryers are cheaper' is true of the cases they are usually tested on — small quantities, one appliance, preheating counted — and it is asserted far beyond them.

What AirfryerHQ has not established

The crossover point where an oven becomes cheaper. It exists, it depends on your machine and your meal, and no measurement in this register locates it.

Anything about gas ovens. Every figure here is electric against electric; a gas oven is a different comparison with a different unit rate and this catalogue holds nothing on it.

The energy cost of a second or third batch, which starts in a hot chamber and therefore costs less than the first. The calculator counts every batch at full cost, which is deliberately generous to the oven's side of the argument.

The qualification — that the saving narrows with quantity — rests partly on the same test's own cake caveat and partly on the mechanism, and the page says which is which. No crossover point is asserted because none has been measured.
